Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the option to challenge specific decisions from the official, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
